CAMBIO CLIMÁTICO, UNA PIEZA DEL PUZZLE
El cambio climático es sólo uno de los aspectos que comprende el cambio global. La acción humana provoca alteraciones en ámbitos tan variados como la biodiversidad, la salud, el uso de los recursos... ¡Y también en el clima! Por ejemplo, la quema de combustibles fósiles, como el petróleo, origina que aumente la temperatura del aire: ha subido casi 1 °C desde 1880. Así, somos los responsables del calentamiento global, que a su vez provoca los deshielos, que termina por producir cambios en las corrientes oceánicas, con las correspondientes consecuencias para los seres vivos.

El cambio climático se refiere a la modificación sustancial y duradera en los patrones generales del clima a lo largo de periodos que van desde décadas a millones de años. El clima de la Tierra ha cambiado desde sus comienzos, pero el término “Cambio Climático”, en el contexto de cambio global, se refiere específicamente al cambio causado por actividades antrópicas. Estas últimas son responsables de importantes modificaciones como, por ejemplo, del calentamiento global, asociado fundamentalmente al incremento en la emisión de gases de efecto invernadero. Por ejemplo, la quema de combustibles fósiles libera 8.500 millones de toneladas de CO2 a la atmósfera cada año, lo que provoca un aumento global de la temperatura del aire. Desde 1880, esta temperatura ha aumentado aproximadamente 0,9 °C. El calentamiento global a su vez induce otros cambios en el clima, por ejemplo los deshielos, que están cambiando las corrientes oceánicas y que incluso podrían suponer bajadas de temperaturas en algunas zonas de la Tierra, al menos temporalmente.

Climate change is just one component of global change. Climate change refers to substantial and lasting changes in general weather patterns. Humans are directly responsible for the ongoing change that we refer to as global warming, largely due to increased emission of greenhouse gases. For example, the burning of fossil fuels releases 8.5 billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year, resulting in an overall increase in air temperature of nearly 1°C since 1880. Global warming does not just mean that temperatures will be warmer, but also that the weather will be more variable with more severe storms and precipitation. So global warming can cause both the melting of the ice caps and huge snowstorms!

Climate change is defined as a substantial and long-lasting change in typical climate patterns across timescales ranging from decades to millions of years. The climate has always changed during Earth’s history, but “Climate Change” in the context of global change specifically refers to changes caused by human activities. Global warming, caused by greenhouse gases emissions, figure among the most important of these man-made changes.
